Buying a home involves a lot of steps, each one is very important for the whole process to go smoothly. One such step is inspecting the home. Uncle Joe is willing to walk through the house with us (for free!) and somehow determine what’s wrong with the house and what needs to be fixed. He may even offer to do the repairs for us, and he will turn the house into our dream home in no time. Sounds like a great plan, and a money saver, right?

Remember that you are hiring the home inspector and they work for you. That does not mean to boss them around, but you should be able to go with them and they should show you all the potential pitfalls the home may have. You also want to know how much they are charging for the inspection. The average is around $350.00. Of course this also depends on the size of the home if there is a pool, termite check etc. Some things can change the price a little based on other factors. Too much and you have to wonder what they are charging you for. Too little and it would make you wonder what kind of inspection are they going to do. The best recommendation is do your due diligence when looking into hiring an inspector to do a home inspection for you.

Are you licensed? If the home inspector isn’t licensed, don’t bother asking more questions. This is an immediate sign not to employ this contractor. Please make sure they are licensed. Also ask if they are a member of a professional home inspector association and how long. Don’t be afraid to ask for credentials.

You should know about the tools that are used so that you do not hire someone that is not qualified to do a good job for you. Your home is your castle so protect it by investing in a quality inspection. You should have an understanding of why it is important that the company you hire has the proper tools to inspect your house.
